Answers:

You need to see a doctor even if you are not yet in pain. My back did and does the exact same and it turned out to be spinal erosion and spinal arthritis.

Your back muscles have to be tight and finding some relief when that happens. Freeing up your back muscles should get rid of that clicking for you and here's how to free it up:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Do you sleep on a very soft bed ? If so please start sleeping on a hard surface.

You may sleep on the Floor Carpet without a pillow ; or

You can put a 1/2" sheet of Plywood on your bed and sleep on it .

Your symptom is that of Spondylosis - a problem with the Spine.

Do not apply any pain balm . You may be advised to wear a Cervical Belt in order to keep your spine straight.

In the meantime, even before you visit a Orthopedic start taking Vitamin-C 400mg daily with breakfast along with Calcium 500 tablet for 10 days.

An X-ray will reveal the extent of the damage to your spine.

This happens to me but I have a spinal cord disease known as spondylitis. You may want to see a doctor.
