5 yr old male, 102.5 fever while taking Ibuprofen, has new onset cold symptoms. !

Question: 5 yr old male, 102.5 fever while taking Ibuprofen, has new onset cold symptoms. Should I take him to the Doc?
My son usually runs a fever, and then sometimes doesn't get sick, but this time he seems to have an upper respiratory infection, at least, he's got a runny nose. Have been giving him Ibuprofen every 6+ hours or so for the last 2 days, but gave him a dose an hour ago and his fever continued to climb; now at 102.5. That's with an oral digital thermometer so I KNOW I'm reading it right! He doesn't FEEL bad, but is a bit lethargic, which for him means he has been sitting watching TV all morning and just agreed to a nap without a fight or argument. So, he's sick! Should I take him to the Doctor? Or are they just going to tell me he has a cold? No sore throat or any other symptoms other than the runny nose this morning. Appreciate any info. Thanks!

Yes please take him. I am a healthcare provider and a father. There is a nastly blood bacteria going around right now, we are getting tons of cases of it, and my 10mo old got it. It was very scary for us. The symptoms match. It is easier for you to speak with your son, so that makes it easier for you. And when they need to get a urine sample, they can just have hime pee in a cup instead of how they got it from our baby (urinary catheter). It may be nothing at all, but you need to take him in, give them the symptoms and MAKE SURE THEY GET: blood culture, CBC, and urine culture. Then If there is any elevated white count, he needs to be put on antibiotics. The blood culture takes 72hrs but if theres any bacteremia (bacteria in the blood) then he is already treated with the antibiotics. It wont hurt to get him checked. And its probably fine so dont panic. But you need to get it checked to make sure it isnt the bacteremia thats going around. (the ER will probably treat you like your dumb but dont worry about it, its your baby!)

****also: Have him lay flat on his back with his legs flat. With your hands behind his head, lift his head, chin to chest and watch his knees. If his knees come up or legs bend and lift, TAKE HIM IN NOW!

Always remember that a child should not be left unattended by a doctor if the fever exceeds 102 degrees F.

Please give him a small teaspoon of Aspirin Infant Suspension immediately and rush him to a doctor without further delay. The fever must not be allowed to cross 102 Deg F.

Simple answer, yes, don't take a risk. His core temperature is 4 degrees above normal. Don't it at home cause you think you know what the doctor will say. Tell the doc what you have done with the ibuprofen for the last 2 days. if hes had this fever for 2 days its not good bring him there now.

Our pediatrician wants to see the child if he has ran a fever more than 3 days. Give it one more day. Go ahead and schedule an appt today for tomorow.
Different things are all around us right now so its untelling what germ he has picked up.
Hope he feels better soon.

Any time a child under 12 has a fever for more than a day you should take them to the Doc. It could be nothing serious but it could be life threatening too. Why chance it.
