Whenever there is surgery going on.

Most elective surgeries are scheduled between 7-5, so most of us work then. Emergencies happen 24/7, so SOMEBODY is on call in every hospital with an OR all the time. Larger hospitals have several people on call, because they may have to run 2-3 ORs at night.

Surgery centers close nights and weekends, so those jobs have better hours, but the pay is usually less. An anesthesiologist must be present in those facilities until every patient has left the facility.

I'm an anesthesiologist.

There will always be one on call at a British NHS. Hospital. Depends where in the world they are located. You don't give much info!
