Question:

Got nasty sunburn from being out in pool too long. What should I use on it.?

Got sunburned 3 days ago but only now feeling burning, itchiness, and peeling. What shall I put on it? Is Noxema good? Please help!

Answers:

The recommended first aid for burns caused by the sun or heat-producing objects (stove, iron, hair curling iron, etc.) is to run cold water over the affected area for several minutes, in order to cool the damaged area. Provided there is no broken skin, you can also apply aloe vera gel, which also helps to soothe and cool the burned skin. Some believe it also helps the skin heal faster. You can find aloe gel at most pharmacies in the sun block section. If you burned yourself badly enough, the damaged skin will begin itching and peeling as the burned skin sloughs off. At this point, when there is no longer pain, you can probably apply a soothing moisturizing lotion.

Don't forget that you should always wear sunblock when you are exposed to the sun. Apply 30 min. before exposure and reapply if you are perspiring excessively or if you are swimming. Be sure to use a broad spectrum sunblock that blocks UVA and UVB rays. It is not worth it to try and get a tan, when you are increasing your risk of getting melanoma (skin cancer).
