A dog bit my finger nail off...?!

Question: A dog bit my finger nail off...?
It's still hanging there. About 80% of it was lifted of my finger and the other part is still sticking on my finger so to note, my nail actually isn't gone. I washed it and put some thick bandages and tape over my whole finger.

Is there anything that I should do? Will my nail heal back by itself? Should I stick my finger in a bag of ice?

Answers:

Stop any bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or towel.

Wash the wound under warm running water for approximately 5 minutes. Use soap and thoroughly rinse soap from the area. Residual soap can cause infection.

Apply antibiotic ointment to the bite. Cover with a bandage. For deeper wounds, use butterfly bandages. Dog bites can be painful so if acetaminophen is tolerated, it can alleviate the pain.

Call your doctor to determine if she wants to schedule an appointment to have the bite examined.

Watch the affected area for swelling, redness or drainage. If any of these occur, call your doctor.

Trim off any part of the nail that is hanging off.
