The front of my lower legs are aching terribly and are bruised? What's the prob!
Question:
The front of my lower legs are aching terribly and are bruised? What's the problem?
I have been running about 3 miles a day for about a month now. I was in decent shape before but I was just power walking 2 miles a day. I wanted to up my workout so I decided to add a mile and run instead. Tonight when I was running I was having so much pain in the lower front portion of my legs, I guess the front of my calves. I looked at them and realized they were purple and black with bruising. I haven't hit them or bumped them on anything. So what is up? Have I just overdone it? Or is this just something I will have to ignore, run anyway, you know no pain no gain. I ended up doing the 3 miles but speed walking. I tried running but it was much too painful. So do ignore the pain or back off for awhile?
Answers:
Back off or you risk a stress fracture. Back it down to 1-2 miles running and 1-2 miles walking for a bit, and see if get betters.
That pain you feel is caused by your bone taking the brunt of the impact. You should make sure that you have a good running shoe with good arch support, and that you are not running flat footed. Non-aspirin (your organs will thank you) pain relievers and ice will help with the pain in the mean-time.
