Wood splinter?!

Question:

Wood splinter?

How do i get a huge wood splinter out of my 3yrolds foot? Its really deep? She barely lets me look at it and it looks like its getting red and swollen

Answers:

You can try soaking the foot to see if the water will make the splinter expand and peek out a little so you can grab it to remove it. The water will also make the skin softer to work with. You may have to have help holding her, and ignore the screeching to do it. You can't do any damage with the tweezers, after all, and you know it's for the best. If it's just too much fight to face, you can simply leave it be and cover it with antibiotic ointment and a bandaid. It's red and puffy because the body is in the process of rejecting it. If you need to or want to, you can simply wait for the body to get it closer to the surface for easier removal. Her foot will be terribly sore while it is happening, though. When mine got splinters, my husband held them and I did the dirty work. Massage upwards from the bottom of where you think the splinter is located, to try to move it closer to the surface so you can get a grip with the tweezers. If you can't, just wait a day and try again. You can also make a trip to the doctor, but they will most likely soak her foot, and then strap her to a papoose board while they remove it. She's going to scream any way you go, unfortunately, so it's your choice how you want to handle it. As long as it's not draining pus, you can always soak and wait it out. I wish you luck, there's no reasoning with a 3 year old. My youngest is 6, and I just had to fish one out of his foot a couple days ago. We still ended up with Dad holding him and me on the tweezers. If you can, they do make splinter tweezers, as at the drug store. I have a pair and they are great, failing that, the pointed tip ones work better than the slanted tip. Good luck, and my sympathies.
