How do I know when fever is a serious problem?!

Question:

How do I know when fever is a serious problem?

my 2 yo son is down with fever for about 5 days. We have done ablood test, everything turns out ok. He has nothing serious. But his temperature keeps going up and down. One moment he's active and looks like he has recovered. Then, his temp will go up again. He is on cedax antibiotics. Is this common or what.

Answers:

A fever can be a scary thing, heck I even get worried and I have three kids. (7, 5, and 3). A virus can make a fever go up and down for a few days. Try to limit his activity while he is not feeling well. That I think is one of the hardest things to do. :o)

A fever is a problem when they become dehydrated. Check his eyes to make sure they look "wet", also you need to make sure that his mouth is also not dry. And if he isn't potty trained to make sure he is having good wet diapers. (My doc always asked for the number of wet diapers.)

Make sure you monitor his fever very carefully, and also check with your pediatrician to find out what they consider as high risk.

Also, make sure he gets lots of fluids. Even Popsicles will help. When my seven year old was sick we had to give her water with an eye dropper.

Another thing you can do is alternate between Tylenol and Advil. But, check with your doc to find out what doses and how often. With my kids Advil helped to bring down their fevers quicker than Tylenol.

Good luck honey! Hope the little buddy gets to feeling better.
