Any tips for an insomniac?!

Question: Any tips for an insomniac?
Hi all,

I suffer quite badly with bouts of insomnia. Like last night, think I got to sleep at 3am, up at 6am, now at work feeling like I was out on the lash last night! Great...

Anyway, does anyone have any tips that might help or anyone that suffers as well? I've tried everything under the sun that they tell you on the web, but thought i'd ask on here as nothing really seems to work. Im not keen on getting drugs from the doctors as I could see them being a little too easy to get used to so i'd rather stay away. Thanks.

Answers:

You probably need to identify the root cause of your insomnia. Many factors can contribute to it, and it could be one thing or a combination of things. What you eat and when you eat it has a definite effect on whether you get to sleep and how soundly you sleep.

Get into a routine, and do not watch TV or work on computer at least an hour before bed. The light affects some people's inner clock.

I know you do not want to take any drugs, but you might reconsider doing so for a limited time (like 30 days) just to get yourself in the habit of sleeping at a certain time. Use them in conjunction with other things like no TV, etc., eating your dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime, warm shower or bath, a glass of milk, etc. Zolpidem (Ambien) is a good choice, as it is not a narcotic and does not cause a person to become addicted to it.

Read something boring, listen to soft repetitive music, get a sleep mask, take an Ambien and do the same thing every night for a month. Good luck.

Try your best to go to sleep before 10pm by tiring yourself out, like through working out, or just moving around a lot, - your choice, only if it gets you really & truly tired though.

And if you go to sleep at like 3am and wake up at 6am and stay active throughout the day till 10pm you'll fall asleep great too.

But don't worry too much I stay awake until 3am like on holidays and stuff and stay awake until 12am accidentally when I have to wake up early the next day.
A recent study showed that people with high IQs go to sleep late... so....

Try fitting blackout blinds on your bedroom windows. If you don't have them already, you will notice quite a difference. And take whatever measures you can to make your bedroom a comfortable place for sleeping in.
In addition, avoid taking stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol before going to bed.

The key is to quiet the chattering of your mind through meditation techniques. Because the mind and body are closely linked, only when the mind calms down will the body follow suit. It also helps to make a special effort get up extra early and aim to get to sleep before midnight. This is to break the cycle of lateness
