The first symptom of an ACL tear is in the way you injured the knee...did you pivot and hear a pop, or land from jumping and hear a pop, or did someone/something hit the outside of your knee and make your knee go inward? There would be a good bit of swelling a short time after the injury and it would stiffen up. This would decrease in 7-10 days. To properly diagnose an ACL tear a trained professional does one or more of a few special tests with their hands to test for looseness in the knee joint (not the knee cap). Ultimately an MRI would confirm what the healthcare professional suspected with the special tests.
