I need to make a decision about a ankle fusion?

and I'm almost sure I am going do to it but my ? is what are the side effects? I had a very bad car accident 14 years ago and both of my legs got broken into hundrets of pieces but my right leg recovered very well of it not so much my left one - anyhow I'm 34 now and they want to fuse my left ankle. Is someone out there who can tell me how this will effect me in about 10 years give or take. SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY - PLEASE. Thank you.

I am in extreme pain and over the past 2 months it has gotten so bad that I hardly can't stand on my left leg. And yes Indy I know no one out there can really help other then my doctor BUT I am not satisfied with him and answering all my questions so I thought I gave yahoo aad a shot SO a big THANK YOU to "Mary D" and "truth-beauty-quark" and "Fred Hunter" for giving their great input and for more questions I can ask my doctor.

You are very young to have your ankle fused. Do you have alot of pain??? Does it effect the way you walk?? You have to remember that jogging, dancing, and wearing high heels, may not be possible after a fussion. So you have to ask your self if you will be ok with the above mentioned.

If you can handle the pain right now, I would wait because they are doing some amazing things with cartilage research. They are experimenting with growing the patients own cartilage in the lab for replacement. So maybe you should get another opinion
