Honest to goodness for me it was a 1. I had a cavity, and I also had 2 teeth that had danger of getting cavities (They had deep wells that went waaaay into the tooth) and I had all 3 drilled and filled in a couple of hours. Honestly, I think it depends on the dentist when it comes to pain. I go to a very good dentist (he is more expensive than others) but he does an outstanding job... Here is the procedure as I remember it at 16:

1.) Novocaine shots (I don't think they actually use Novocaine anymore, but whatever is used works great!) He gave me 4. 2 in the front of my mouth at the roof of my mouth, and 2 in the back of my mouth at the bottom. One of the 2 was in the cheek, the other below the tooth with the cavity. I did not even feel the needle go into my skin!

2.) Drilling. The medicine worked very quickly and he drilled away and I didn't feel a thing. There was an odd smell as the drill creates friction with the cavity and burns it up a bit... But it was very painless. All i felt was the pressure in my mouth.

3.) The Filling. For me, he used this white stuff that hardened under a light. He put it on a small stick, stuck it on my tooth and shaped it to fit perfectly. This was also painless.

4.) Recovery. It took a few hours for the medicine to wear off (in the meantime I talked funny and drooled but that's about it) when the numbness wore off I felt absolutely no pain at all and could not even tell by feel or sight where the fillings were! I still can't tell where they are 7 years later! I was able to eat almost right away and it was back to normal for me!

Still 7 years later I have not had a problem with one cracking, shifting, falling out... I can't even tell where my real tooth ends and the filling begins! Good luck! I am sure you will be fine... Fillings aren't a death sentence like they may have been back in your parents day!

Heck you won't even miss any school work as I believe all schools are out this Monday anyway! LOL

My own fillings.
