Chronic pain after a ankle sprain?!

Question: Chronic pain after a ankle sprain?
Approximately 8 months ago I rolled my ankle walking up a gutter, I heard a loud snap followed by intense pain and immediate swelling. I went to hospital where a x ray was performed and no break was reported. I followed on with the RICE treatment for several weeks and swelling and bruising remained unchanged so I returned my GP who sent me for a second x ray and still no break was seen. I was given a referral to see a physiotherapist who did many weeks worth of work and was told if there was little improvement that I should seek further advice from my GP. I did but she kept sending me home telling me to rest. Now it's been 8 months and I can't be on my feet more than an hour and a half other wise I am crippled for the rest of day. I now walk with a permanent limp and I can't drive any longer than an hr because of the discomfort and intense pain and I can't wear shoes with any type of heel, looking at the ankle it's still the size of half a tennis ball. I don't know what to do next and the pains so severe I don't know how much more I can cope with, surely by now it should have healed ? Can any one tell me where or what I should do next because I can't go on living like this.

It sounds like a torn ligament to me. I think you need to see a different doctor. I had a similar injury two years ago and ended up being told by the doctor to strap it up with sports tape to stabilise my ankle. I followed his advice to the letter but it still took my ankle ages to stop hurting, and the swelling is still there (although much less these days). My ankle really felt unstable (as if it would bend sideways at any moment) and clicked ever time I took a step. So... see another doctor and get a second opinion. All the best for a speedy recovery!

I have broke my ankle multiple times. Each time I was anti-inflams for months. You have to get that swelling down so your body can repair itself. I would also keep it raised as much as possible. Also icing it for 15 min min at a time.

First time I was on crutches for 2 months. Second time I broke it I got an air cast with icing gel pads built in. I almost always had it iced.

Try taking Shark's Cartilage. Look it up, for joint problems. Good for healing, especially for tendon and ligament problems. You might also try taking zinc. Did they check the tendons/ligaments? But, additionally, see a different doctor for a second opinion.
