Leg pain the AM?!

Question:

Leg pain the AM?

I have a 9 yr old daughter. In the am she cries of leg pain. Her intake of Ca is very poor cannot get her to drink milk at all. Dr says it is just growing pains. But I think it is more to it than that.

Answers:

It most likely is just growing pains. Growing pains can be extremely painful. If you are worried about her calcium intake, put her on a vitamin or some sort of calcium supplement appropriate for her age. If she isn't getting enough calcium, it could cause her bones to become brittle. Lack of calcium is probably not contributing to her pain, though. Another cause of her leg pain could be shin splints. That is where the muscle actually becomes separated from the bone. Symptoms of shin splints are shooting pains from the knee to the ball of the foot. However, her pain would be constant and not just in the morning. Have her do some stretches at night before she goes to bed and in the morning when she wakes up...stretching can help alleviate the pain if her muscles are tight. But, like I said before, your doctor is right, it is most likely growing pains. If the pain is too extreme, take her to another doctor for a second opinion. Good luck!
