my cast hurts my foot?!

Question: My cast hurts my foot?
Broke my ankle yesterday and got a cast put on it today. It feels fine except for the top part of my foot.. it kind of squeezes there and is a little painful. I've never had a cast before and didn't expect it to be 100% comfortable but just wanted to know if this is okay/normal?

I also broke my ankle and just had surgery in December 2010 (2 plates, 7 screws) . The cast was very tight the day after from the swelling. If you have a recliner, recline it, and put a stack of pillows on it. I had my foot propped above my head, and that brought the swelling down. I also put an ice pack directly behind my knee........... on the same leg with the broken ankle, obviously, lol. That helped soooo much. If you don't have a recliner try laying in bed with the same tactic. Check your toes once an hour to see if they still have blood flowing to them. Push on a toe, is there a flush of pink? are they warm or at least room temp? if so youre in the clear. So sorry youre going through this, it sucks, and i hope you get well soon.

Im in an ankle cast.

Are you keeping your foot elevated? Keep your foot elevated above the level of your heart. Right now your foot is swelling because of the injury and also because you are unable to move your foot. If you notice any numbness or tingling in your toes or if they feel like they've fallen asleep you may need to go get it checked. If the cast is digging into your skin and it becomes very painful go immediately to the ER and get it checked. More than likely though if you will elevate your foot and put an ice pack on your foot some of the swelling will go down and it will feel better. The swelling in your foot could take a week to go down. For the next several days stay off your foot as much as possible. Keep it elevated like I mentioned above and put an ice pack on your foot. Don't put the ice pack directly on the skin. You can even put it on the cast. One way to tell if the circulation is being compromised is to press on one of your toenails until it turns white. Then let go. Look to see if it returns to it's normal color within a few seconds. If it doesn't then you may have some problems with circulation to your toes and your cast is too tight. I was in a cast up to my knee for 10 weeks because of a broken foot. It isn't comfortable but after a week or so you do get used to it.

I'm an RN
