what does bruised shins mean?!

Question: What does bruised shins mean?
I played basketball for around 2 weeks and they would not stop hurting until one day I couldn't take the pain anymore. I was sent to the doctor and said I have shin splints and I haven't played on them for almost 6 weeks with physical therapy. The pain never went away through the 6 weeks. I started to jog and the pain immediately came right back and in 2 different spots. I have a large bruise where the original pain was and a smaller one above it. The athletic trainer said to call the doctor and I'm just looking ideas as to what she'll say.

It's likely that you have experiences stress fractures. The severity of them can vary from minor to severe. If your pain hasn't subsided in the past few weeks, you should be examined for a stress fracture (usually a bone scan). Recovery from SF's can vary. I was off running for 4 months with mine...and I had to start back very, very slowly and did a lot of no impact cross training in the meantime.

The other consideration could be compartment syndrome...especially if you are having swelling the front part of the leg (sometimes the swelling leaves you with bruises later on). ....but I'd say stress fractures are more likely and common.

...it could be that you just require more time to heal....
