Actually, neither. You aren't really asleep until around 5 to 10 minutes after your really sleeping. In this stage of sleep your brain produces theta waves, which are very slow brain waves. This means you can be awaken from sleep very easily. Sometimes in this stage of sleep when someone is awaken they will claim that they weren't really sleeping. It is not until the second stage of sleep were you are actually sleeping. The second stage lasts about 20 minutes, this is were your heart rate decreases and your body temperature drops a little. Stage three is when your between a light and deep sleep and is known as the transitional period. Stage four is known as the delta sleep because the brain gives off slow brain waves that are called delta waves. This is the stage that most people who sleep walk start to do so. And stage five is the deep sleep. This is the stage were people start to dream due to their increased brain activity and their voluntary muscles can no longer be controlled. So technically you aren't really getting the rest you need until maybe the middle of stage two or beginning of stage three.

falling asleep, once your body goes into that state is when all your body relaxes and starts giving you energy etc. for example, if you lay down in the middle of the day but don't fall off to sleep, it wouldn't count.
