Multi level spinal fusion?!

Question: Multi level spinal fusion?
Hi all...I am due to have a multi level spinal fusion and cage operation on the 5th April...I was in shock when the doctor explained i would be having this done as i have had the same lumber back pain for nearly a year now and have had all the non surgical options available to me so my surgeon says this is the next step. I have bulging discs in L4-L5/S1 and some degeneration in both discs.
My question is has anybody had this surgery and how long did u spend in hospital and what was your recovery time afterwards? I know all this will be covered in my pre op but that is ages away and would like some for warning if possible!

I had the same fusion on Sept. 20 2010. They kept me in the hospital for 3 days afterward. The pain is a little rough at first. Mainly just when you try to move around on the bed, but the morphine should take care of you for the most part.

I was one of the unlucky ones to have either scar tissue or nerve damage causing leg pain afterward. I have another exploratory surgery on March 14. Most people get instant pain relief afterward, with possibly some numbness in the legs.

It is a very scary time, I know what you are going through, but most of it is the anticipation leading up to it. If possible, tell the anesthesiologist to give you something to calm your nerves before the surgery. That helped tremendously. I was given that an hour before surgery and was laughing and joking with the nurses and doctors.

This surgery is very common and you should be fine. If you have any more questions, please email me on here and I will do my best to help you.

it will hurt
