Jaw problems...?!

Question:

Jaw problems...?

A few months ago I was eating an apple. I took a big bite and felt as if my jaw moved out of place. As if I dislocated it and it immediately moved back. Ever since I have experienced common events, but not with really big bites. Some normal sized ones. This morning, I decided to have some strawberries and I couldn't open my mouth all the way. If I got a piece in my mouth I chewed and it hurt. Right after I looked in the mirror, and decided it'd be best to ask here. I currently can open it completely with no pain. When I was eating the apple it wasn't painful, just odd. There may have been a bit of pain in the ones that followed, but the feeling was more weird than painful. Today was the first day I had pain with eating...and I couldn't open my mouth fully. Any ideas as to what I did?

No, no muscle pain. I just went to the mirror to see if I could notice anything weird, but all I noticed is now when I open my mouth there is a grinding noise type thing.

Answers:

It sounds very similar to TMJ disorder. The TMJ is the joint connecting your jaw to the rest of your skull. In some individuals (like me!) it can frequently sort of "partly" dislocate. It doesn't break any tendons or ligaments or anything else that might be in there, but the jaw moves slightly out of place. Sometimes it hurts, usually it doesn't really. If it "pops" again, just rub the joint a bit until it goes back in. The grinding you described is also another classic sign of this.

It's not life-threatening or anything. It's not even life-changing at all, unless it starts to hurt big time, in which case you avoid hard food for a bit. I think it's caused by grinding teeth in the night or something.
