Feedback wanted on Neurontin and Ultram used for pain?!

Question:

Feedback wanted on Neurontin and Ultram used for pain?

Recently diagnosed with 2 degenerated discs and arthritis in my spine with a possible tear in L-5. I was prescribed Neurontin and Ultram for the pain. Although I have only been on these meds for five days, and I am still titrating the full dosage into my system over the next few days and that it may take a bit for my body to adjust, I hate the way the drugs are making me feel. After doing some research of my own, I am finding reports of horrible side effects, some of which I am already experiencing, and would like the opinions of others as to the success/failure you have had with this combination of meds for back pain. My first three days on these medication were absolutely horrendous. My doctor warned me of NONE of the side effects I am feeling. Please, if anyone has taken these for back pain, please respond. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Hi, I've recently been in the same boat and know how you're feeling.
I am curious though, you did not mention any nerve damage? Neurontin is usually prescribed when there is nerve damage involved along with the other issues. Since you have an L5 injury, I'm guessing maybe you are having some Sciatic pain, and that is why your doctor has chosen it.
I am sure that the side effects that you are experiancing are from the Neurontin alone. This is why it is introduced to your body slowly. The side effects are miserable at first I know, but will ebb some after 2 to 3 wks. I can tell you, for most with nerve damage the transition period is well worth it, because the drug is very effective in correcting the damage. However, for me the side effects made my life too unmanagable and I switched to a similar drug called Lyrica, so you may want to keep that name in mind to discuss with your doc.
The Ultram you are taking is a pretty great drug. It is commonly prescribed for people with mild or moderate constant pain. I have been taking it along with a variety of pain management drugs for years, and have had no side effects with it at all. I take a total of 200mg a day.
I gotta tell ya, doctors do seem to be vague when prescibing meds unless you really push them to explain, you may want to look into a pain management program to avoid doctors like that. However, while you are with the doctor that you are now, you can always discuss your medictions and their combinations with your pharmacist, they are usually very helpful and will give you direct answers.
Anyway, I hope you get the relief from your pain that you need soon, I know how hard it is to maintain!!
