when is anyone going to answer my question?!

Question: When is anyone going to answer my question?
Scared of surgery.. please help!?
Polyps removal surgery?
So... I am most likely going to go through with the polyps removal surgery.. and I was kinda worried.. :S
I had a few questions to ask and I would really appreciate it if someone can answer me...

- am I gonna need a blood test first (like b4 surgery?)
- how many needles do you get through this whole procedure (including the injectable painkillers?)
- how long do I have to stay in the hospital for?
- does the shape of your nose change after this surgery?
- and when they use those tweezers to take out the packing.... can they put me to sleep cuz I read that was a really painful process
- I also read that I can lose my sense of smell for good... (IS THAT TRUE?)

okay i will help you.

dont be worried. this is a common condition, and these days polyps can be removed very successfully.

1. you will need a small blood test for surgery. this is routine. this can be taken after they insert a drip. this is used to put you to sleep, and give you any fluids or medications during and after surgery
2. can all be done with 1 needle.
3. should be in hospital no longer than a couple of days, if there are no complications
4. no it will not
5. anaesthetic unneccessarily is not good. i would bear the pain and get the packing out, while your awake.
6. if the polyps are near the olfactory bulb, you can lose some smell....but its very rare!

i would treat the problem. nosebleeds can become very severe and lead to uncontrolled blood loss. you really dont want that. be brave & positive and you will be fine!!

Actually, I would like an answer myself. I was diagnosed with nasal polyps nearly 40 years ago, but didn't have the surgery because the doctor said they would just grow back. I have been thinking about having them removed lately because it would be nice to be able to breathe out of that nostril for once. I haven't had any nosebleeds though, just the inconvenience of not being able to blow my nose or sniff out of that nostril (ever).

it is day surgery. yes, they stick you with one needle. maybe two if you get a blood test. grow up. you will have more things than needles to worry about if you have kids. your nose doesn,t change. you don,t lose your sense of smell. it,s not even invasive surgery. it,s really not that painful. having the packing removed in uncomfortable, but easily bearable. get 'er done! you won,t suffer at all.

My brother had it done once and needs to have it done again as polyps sometimes grow back.No blood test is needed but that is also at the Dr's discretion, 2) One needle, actually an IV with pain killer in it and a way of putting you to sleep 3) It is an in & out procedure, in that morning and out that evening barring no complications, 4)shape of your nose stays the same except for some swelling on most people & depending on the amount of polyps being removed 5) the pain is not that bad when removing the packing so no they won't put you to sleep 6) my brother lost his sense of smell for a short time but it came back so it is not gone for good. 7) yes, you need it done if you have a lot of nosebleeds. you lose more blood than you think so you need to get the blood loss stopped. If you don't you could lose iron and have to go get IV's of iron (no fun I had 4 in one month) so better to get stuck once than several times getting iron due to blood loss. Just don't worry, this is a pretty quick procedure and will be over before you know it. You will be fine. You can't believe everything you read on the net, those are usually worse case scenarios. Relax, you'll be ok.

my cousin had this done two weeks ago. he did not need a blood test before. you only have one needle stick only when you get the iv no more then that. you are in the hospital for like half a day. your nose looks the same. he said getting the packing out did not hurt at all he just said it ticled and kind of felt like your brains were coming out but he said no pain and he said it took 2 seconds for him to take it out. you can still smell after. just get it done he said he was only in pain for a day. usually they take your blood pressure and all your vitals before surgery and just look in your throat and nose. and listen to your heart and lungs.
