How can I relieve pain in my shoulder and neck?!

Question:

How can I relieve pain in my shoulder and neck?

Ouch! When I woke up this morning I could barely move. I've just started a new fitness routine, I've been going to the gym for about two weeks. I think I sprained my shoulder mid-back under the shoulder blade performing push-ups or that pushup you do off the bench with your arms behind you. The pain moves up and down from just under the shoulder blade to up in the neck. If I can get the muscle warm and working the pain seems to subside. I've been taking advil and alieve night and day. Now, yesterday, I had to get an MMR immunization because I'm going back to school and my old shot records were incomplete. Had the shot in the sore arm. This morning I can hardly move, I'm in so much pain I was actually in tears. Going to the doctor or emergency room is not an option, it's not like I'm dying, just hurting. So anybody with some knowledge of sports injuries of this type, please give me your best advise to get through this and get the pain to let up so I can function today. Thanks

Answers:

Apply heat and then if you can, get someone to gently massage the stiff and tight areas, this may hurt at first but it will help i the long wrong.
It sounds as if you have just strained your trapizius muscles, the pain should subside in 3-5 days, but keep off the gym equipment for about 7-10 days to let the healintake some effect. For the time being, just rest.
