My ankles always pop, but after exercising I have short and sudden pain in one a!

Question:

My ankles always pop, but after exercising I have short and sudden pain in one ankle. Should I be concered?

My ankles have always popped when I rotate them. During or sometimes after (up to several hours) working out, my right ankle gets severe and sudden intense pain. For about 2-5 minutes I will be unable to point my foot foreward. As quickly as the pain comes, it leaves, sometimes right after my ankle lets out a small pop. Is this something I should be concerned about and what can I do to keep this from happening?

Answers:

Did this popping start occurring after ankle sprains/injuries?

I sprained my ankle about ten years ago. I did not follow RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) common sense, failed to take a NSAID (anti-inflammatory) and worked on it for 12 hours. Needless to say it swelled the size of a grapefruit. After my ankle healed my ankle pops or so I thought.

I went an Orthopedic Doctor and he stated it is actually tendons clicking not the ankle popping. Furthermore, the Doctor stated that only on rare occasions would he ever consider performing surgery for this condition because it would likely result in worse pain.

It might be your actual ankle joints popping but I thought I would share another possibility. I just take ibuprofen and it resolves my pain and most of the clicking.

GOOD LUCK!
