Regaining movement of previously broken pinky finger.?!

Question:

Regaining movement of previously broken pinky finger.?

At the end of May, I broke my pinky finger in gym class. The clinic says it's completely healed now and I have to work on bending it since it was in a splint the entire month. The break went through the joint, apparently. Anyway, I've been working on bending it, and at a certain point it just stops and hurts a bit. Starting sunday, I'm going to be horseback riding all week. I went riding with the splint on, and I did fine. But how long is it going to take to regain all the movement of my finger? If I don't have full function and strength in two weeks, I have to go to physical therapy, and we can't afford that.

Answers:

You may NEVER get 'full function' in your pinky, and even if you do, it could take five years before that happens. Try 'lifiting weights' ... literally, make 'small sand bags' that you can drape over your finger and then 'lift' first with your palm down, and then with it up. Also try different 'pointing' exercises ... and keep 'working on the movement' ... even if it is 'hurting' you should get a bit more movement in that joint every time you 'exercise' it ... and simply TELL THEM THAT YOU CAN NOT AFFORD THERAPY ... they may just 'give it' to you and not charge you, or may give you a paper (several pages) of exercises you can do on your own. And I wouldn't worry about going riding ... just 'point your pinky out' and HAVE FUN ...
I broke my arm at the shoulder and then my knee ... they both hurt ... but not nearly as much as when I broke a finger or a toe!
