Why do they put plastic over the cotton part of a bandaid?!

Question:

Why do they put plastic over the cotton part of a bandaid?

U know how sometimes the middle part is cotton only and sometimes they put a layer of plastic with holes over the cotton part.

Answers:

this is to keep the cotton from getting stuck up in the scab that forms on the wound. It does some good, but it also can macerate the skin if the bandaide is left on too long, because it tends to hold moisture in the wound area.
