Discectomy?!

Question:

Discectomy?

I am going to be getting one soon, and was wondering if anyone knows about the procedure. I am interested in knowing things such as pain level after, pre-op procedure, do you need a catheter, recovery time, etc. thanks :)

Answers:

Hi there, I had a discectomy almost 2yrs ago now, and no regrets at all. My disc was ruptured into my sciatic nerve, so when I woke in the recovery room I already knew I felt better.
As far a pre-op, I checked into the hospital the night before my surgery, the nurse explained my procedure to me again, cause I was a little nervous, an anesthesiologist came to explain what they would be doing with me and that they would also be with me during surgery. I did not need a catheter, however my disc problem did not cause any incontinence if yours is, one may be necessary. My recovery was amazing, I release from the hospital the day after surgery and totally independent with in 6-7 days. Just had to take it slow and easy. After staples were removed,(2 wks), I began with a physical therapist and did that for about 6wks. I still do back strengthening exercises, but my major back concerns aren't near what they were before surgery.
Good luck with yours!!
