What should you do if you see a bike accident?!

Question:

What should you do if you see a bike accident?

I was just walking home and I saw a girl on the ground with blood on her face and hands and a bike nearby. There were other people there who saw the accident, and they had called 911.

Besides getting an ambulance, what else should people do if they come across someone who has gotten hurt? Is it important to keep the person talking? Should you try to find out their name and information? Should you call their roommate or family members?

Answers:

Aside from the obvious of not moving an injured person and treating for shock. As a bystander you could:

1. Ensure that someone continues to monitor that the individuals condition does not worsen.

2. If they are coherent, you can ask them if they want you to contact anyone. That way their family/significant other could already be on the way to the scene or the hospital.

2. Control traffic to keep the area clear for emergency responders. There is nothing worse than having to wait for an ambulance driver to make his' way through "rubber neckers".

4. Identify if there was another vehicle involved and observe that the driver does not leave the scene of the accident (or if they do at least be able to identify them).
