Shoulder injury- fastpitch pitching and throwing, overuse- need help?!

Question:

Shoulder injury- fastpitch pitching and throwing, overuse- need help?

Well, I went to the doctor for the pain in my shoulder which was from overusing my arm from pitching and throwing so much. The doctor said it was just overuse and told me to take anti-inflammitories and ice. I've been playing everyday since april or march and I knew it was bound to start hurting. Has anyone ever had an injury like this? The doctor said to rest for about a week, and if it doesn't get better I should get an MRI. If it doesn't get better, what other injuries could I have? Anything really serious?

I really just want to get back in the game, but I know I should take it easy. I don't want to be sidelined by a serious injury like torn rotator cuff, etc. Any input?

Answers:

You need to have the doctor give you a referral for physical therapy. Rest alone doesn't fix the biomechanical deficiencies that are causing your shoulder pain. Basically you have muscles that are not working properly enough to accept the demands you are placing on your shoulder. If your doctor doesn't send you to a physical therapist then find a different doctor. You should be seeing a sports medicine orthopedic doctor if you really want to fix this.
