Can they numb the area when you give blood?!

Question:

Can they numb the area when you give blood?

Hello.
I am thinking of giving blood. However I have a low pain threshold and hate needles! Can they numb the area first or make it less painful in some way.
I'd like to be able to get over my needle fears and think this may help.
Any ideas?

Answers:

Yes,
It involves injecting the area with a local anashetic so that the deeper needle doesn't hurt when that is injected in....
It's a bit like whacking yourself on the head to take your attention away form the headache!
Having had both procedures I declined the local on subsequent occasions because it was just as painfull to have it as the longer needle (which doesn't hurt that much actually) and you can't feel anything in the area for a while afterwards. so I thought 'whats the point?'
