Answers:

Congratulations! You are one of a large group of people who want to help save lives on a daily basis.
EMT are trained and certified in an intensive course lasting from 250 to 300 hours (classroom time). Your Certification, on completion, will be at the National level or State level depending on the testing (usually by state preference).

A very simple overview of an EMT job "is keep the patient alive" until advance care can be received. This can mean anything from doing CPR before and during transport to extrication of a car crash victim from a vehicle wreck.

Many calls are for minor problems from "I feel sick" to "I sprained my ankle". Some calls are the major multiple casualty, high impact, crash 'em, smash 'em events that make the news.

If you are seriously considering this line of work, ask the local Fire Department or Medic unit if they will allow you to "ride along" for a day. The EMT's and Paramedics can advise you on local courses and certifications available.
Depending on at what service you chose employment with, hours can be 24 on 24 off, 8 each day, or as a volunteer 24/7 on call with the local Fire or medical agency.

Being an EMT medic is a very rewarding job. You will save the lives of many and comfort those in pain. Some will credit you with super-human skill. On the downside, there will be the tough calls. You will experiance death up close and personal. Patients you can do nothing for who will die in your care. Expect a high level of stress.

Good Luck!
