If you broke your rib, would, (with enough force) the bone be able to break the !

Question:

If you broke your rib, would, (with enough force) the bone be able to break the skin causing an open fracture?

If you were to be smashed into something hard from backwards, or something hit you and your ribs broke, would there be a chance, or would they be able to break through the skin and cause an open fracture with the ribs sticking out?
As all of the organs are kept WITHIN the ribcage, they wouldn't be damaged right?

Has this ever happened to anyon? Or does anyone know about this sort of injury please?
What would it feel like exactly?

By the way, this hasn't happened to me, but i am writing a novel and need peoples opinions please!

Answers:

It is possible, the organs may survive it unscathed but the lung would be damaged by ribs broken that hard. It would have to be a pretty hard hit for them to break the skin, with a hit like that, more than one rib or even the entire torso or back would be busted up also.
