Swelling in my Left Foot--Possible torn ligament?!

Question:

Swelling in my Left Foot--Possible torn ligament?

Hi everyone,

I have been dealing with a lot of foot issues lately (I just found out a month ago that I have a stress fracture in my medial sesamoid bone of my left foot) and the other day I was walking around a little more than normal and wearing my tennis shoes and an ace bandage wrap.
Approximately two days later the top of my foot hurt me so bad that I could barely walk... I tried to buy crutches at my local medical supply store but they were all out... :( In any case, I went back to my docotor and had more x-rays taken but he didn't see any stress fractures on the top of my foot.
Here are my symptoms:
-swelling on top of my three middle toes
-warm to touch
-stiffness, hard and painful to walk

Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I may have? Since it doesn't appear that i fractured a bone i think it must be something muscular like a pulled tendon... but then what would explain the swelling? I don't know what to do and I would appreciate any feedback or advice... thanks!

Answers:

if your doctor didn't see a stress fracture, you might have pulled a tendon, ligament or muscle of your foot. the swelling is a natural reaction whenever a body part gets injured (open wound or not). what you need to do, is continue wearing the ace band, don't put too much pressure on your foot (if you can find a cane, that's good too) and if you are not allergic to motrin, advil or aspirin, take one of those three as directed. taking the medication will help reduce the swelling the medication and putting ice to the area willl also reduce swelling. i also agree with the person above me...i heard "MSM" which is a vitamin supplement that you can buy over the counter is good to take in this situation too...
