I've quit smoking for roughly 3 weeks. My throat still hurts. Any ideas?!

Question:

I've quit smoking for roughly 3 weeks. My throat still hurts. Any ideas?

When I first quit, I immediately felt like I could breathe better. I knew there would be symptoms. I felt like I was sore, fatigued, sleepy, hungry, nervous/fidgity, and my throat felt fuzzy and sore.

Well, a sore throat makes sense, since I had been abusing my throat with all that carbon monoxide. The soreness went away eventually. Now, I feel like I have a lump in my throat on the right side. I had my tonsils taken out when I was a kid, so I'm not sure what it is exactly.

I smoked menthols from as far as I can remember. I've heard of rumors that menthol cigarettes have additives that cause some serious damage. Anyone else gone through this and know of any inexpensive remedies? I've been looking into maybe teas or herbal remedies, but haven't found anything that works yet.

Then again, it could just be the sand in Iraq

Answers:

What you are experiencing is normal and it may continue for several more weeks. I had the same thing the last time I tried to quit...I was like a cat with a hairball. Yuck.

To help ease the cough and sore throat, get some LifeSavers or other hard candy to suck on. They will coat your throat and should ease the soreness.

If the symptoms you are having do not let up in the next couple of weeks, see your doctor.

Congrats on quitting!! I hope I can...I'm getting ready to...this time for good. Wish me luck.
