Every time I'm about to fall asleep, I have to wake myself up because I can!

Question: Every time I'm about to fall asleep, I have to wake myself up because I can't breathe?
This has been happening for about three days. I go to fall asleep, and literally two minutes later I'm trying to wake myself up because I'm having trouble breathing or can't breathe at all (in the dream.) Once I do wake up, I gasp for breath and I can feel my heart pumping faster. It's like I stopped breathing or something? It's a bit scary and have had hours of sleep loss due to this problem. Could there be anything wrong?
I haven't changed anything that I originally do in my daily routine (my diet, exercise etc.) And the faint dreams I have before I have to wake myself are fairly normal. I just stop breathing all of the sudden, and struggle to wake myself up.

Answers:

its called sleep apnea. it's nothing serious. i have it too. i never used to until about a year ago. for some people it's present their whole life, for others it comes and goes. i'm allergic to wheat, and i have found that when i reintroduce wheat into my diet, it causes sleep apnea. i've heard of this happening with other people who have food allergies. i've attatched a url for a website with some good information on sleep apnea :)

sounds like sleep apnea to me. see a doctor right away. whatever it is, that's not good.
