Is what I have "trigger finger"?!

Question:

Is what I have "trigger finger"?

I was playing a long tennis match today, and about 10 minutes after the match was done, i had a really sharp pain in my right arm. if you flip your hand over so that you can see your palm, it covered about 3-9 inches below my wrist. after i felt the pain, my thumb locked up and bent down, and i had to use my other hand to push it back into position, then the pain slowly decreased. when i got home, it happened again, but my index finger locked up the same way. it's not hurting any more, but the speed of the fingers on my right hand has significantally decreased, and my pinky is bending awkardally. i play tennis for about 1:30-2:00 hours every day, and I also teach tennis for about 3:00-7:00 hours a day. Would these things cause "trigger finger"?

Answers:

Some of these symptoms do sound like "trigger finger" Usually, however, pain is located at the base of the finger on the palmar side. There are a number of other potential diagnoses that should be considered, such as variants of compartment syndrome that have fairly serious consequences. The amount of stress your playing places on the muscles of your forearm sounds considerable.

I would suggest you get an evaluation by an upper extremity specialist. These are usually, though not always orthopedic surgeons. Major medical centers usually have at least one physician with this interest.

Good luck
