Is my son suffering from growing pains at 14?!

Question:

Is my son suffering from growing pains at 14?

My son who is 14 is constantly complaining of pains in his legs and thighs. I have checked that he hasn't done any sport injuries etc. He seems to be getting very tall over the last 12 months. Could this pain be growing pains if there is such a thing?

Answers:

There is no real medical equivalent or explanation for the lay term ' growing pains'. (sdpdt1297 has given a completely incorrect description of Osgood-schlatters, this is a knee condition involving pulling of the soft bone tissue of the tibial table in energetic youngsters.)

Night time pain in the thighs or muscle cramps in children are common and can sometimes be so distressing that the child will cry. Their pathophysiology is not understood. Usually they are managed with reassurance and simple pain relief. It is important for you to get your doctor to check him out to exclude any more serious pathology.
