Bunion surgery? Have you had it? Please share...?!

Question:

Bunion surgery? Have you had it? Please share...?

I'm considering bunion surgery. If you've had it, please answer:
Was it successful?
How bad did it hurt?
How did you have to be off from work/school?
Did your insurance cover it?
Can you do things now that you couldn't before (like wear heels)?
Anything else you want to share...

thanks!

Answers:

I just had bunion surgery on one foot a little over a month ago. The surgery itself didn't hurt, but I was completely out for it. I was out of work for for a few days - pretty much laying on a couch in and out of sleep (painkillers were needed) for 3 or 4 days. But after a nice long weekend, I was able to work from home for a week (desk job) and then went back at the office a week later. I've been in a big boot for 6 weeks, and go back to the doctor today for another set of x-rays, and HOPEFULLY I will no longer have to wear the boot.

Your recovery time, amount of pain..etc will depend a great deal on your age as well as the kind of surgery you have. Some simply have the bone that sticks out shaved down, others (like me) have that done, plus the big toe broken, and straightened with a screw put in, others have even more intensive surgeries.

I hope that in a few months I'll be able to say that I'm completely recovered, running on the treadmill, and happy as a clam that I went through with it. I will say this: it was painful enough that if it was for cosmetic reasons alone, I probably would not do it again. I had constant pain in my foot for the last few years, so assuming this takes care of that, when it's all said and done I'll say it was worth it.

Whatever you do, make sure you go to a reputable Podiatrist. I've read some horror stories online. My surgeon was great, and was recommended to me by a friend who had also had surgery performed by the same podiatrist. Remember, you have to walk on your feet for the rest of your life, so you want to take very good care of them. :)

Hope that helps - and the best of luck to you.
