My toe has been numb for two days, now it is painful to walk on and swollen.?

I went to a clinic, and the doctor spent a good deal of time with me, asking questions and poking at it, but he couldn't come up with anything. (It wasn't in pain yet when I saw him, just numb)
he told me follow up with my family doc in two weeks if it is still bugging me.
Any ideas?
