How can I stop snoring?!

Question:

How can I stop snoring?

My wife can't sleep because of this and it is affecting her energy level during the day, also she gets really mad at me. I don't want to sleep in seperate rooms. Turning over doesn't help. I'm 6'4'', 270 pounds, with no major health problems, except for I have allergies and tend to have a snuffy nose.

Answers:

First and foremost, make an appointment with a sleep specialist immediately...you may have a treatable problem that is not readily apparent during a routine health exam. They can rule out any possibilities and if it IS serious, they can fix it and give you machines to help. It may be some time before they will take you, though, sometimes appointments are hard to get.

In the meantime, there are basically two different things you can try that you can get from your local drugstore:

Breathe Right Strips, bands you place across your nose that help open the nasal passages

Snore Spray (one brand is also made by Breathe Right), which is sprayed directly into your throat and coats the nasal passages in a way that allows air to flow through more smoothly.

My wife uses a combination of both of these and it works really well. If it's really really bad, she will take some allergy pills in addition, before bed, but that's rare.

But the sleep specialist is VERY important. Even if you have no other health problems, if you have mild apnea that can cause you to stop breathing in your sleep.
