Question:

If you are outside in a cold enviroment, is it better to run around or conserve energy to keep warm?

If a person is stuck outside for half an hour in temperatures of about 50 degrees F with a moderate wind, would it be better to run around or stay in place to conserve heat?

Answers:

hi there

I have watched in one of the survival tips on tv, on how to survive when you are lost in a very extremely cold condition - like in a forest during winter...

The disadvantage of doing too much exercises would cause you to sweat, and the sweat will be frozen underneath your clothes. this will be just like ice wrapped around your body.
It would be advantageous though to move your different joints once in awhile to make sure they wont get frozen.

The final conclusion of that show- When you are lost in that extremely cold scenario, it is better to stay inside your car, conserve your energy, dont get wet with your own perspiration, and hope that you will get found. Sounds like a very pessimistic attitude, but statistics (according to the tv show) say that survival probability would be higher than wandering around, and attempting to explore the cold.
