My legs hurt after 3 days of walking 28 miles is this normal?!

Question:

My legs hurt after 3 days of walking 28 miles is this normal?

i went on a church activity and it required a lot of walking...28 miles to be exact...not including the walking around camp and around on the busses. does anyone know if my legs should still be hurting after 3 days of the last day of walking?

Answers:

Yes! If it feels like a strain, it may take a couple more days to begin to feel relief. If they are muscles cramps, also called "charlie horses", then I wonder if you took in enough fluids on the trip and now your electrolytes (potassium, sodium, chloride) are out of balance. If it's more of a strain, just sore and tender, warm up your muscles by doing gentle walking for 5-10 minutes and then GENTLY stretch your legs. You can also alternate between cold packs and hot packs to help relieve the discomfort, or apply some icy hot to your muscles. Tylenol might also take off the edge if you do not have any liver problems. If it's more of a "charlie horse", also do the warm up and stretching, but then take in plenty of water and drink something like a Gatorade or Propel every day for a couple of days. These things should help with your healing. (I'm a RN)
