Should I have my ankle x-rayed?!

Question:

Should I have my ankle x-rayed?

So I was walking, and my ankle twisted, and it made a terrible snapping sound. The pain was pretty bad, but I was able to hobble back to my apartment...about a block and a half away. However, as time has gone on...it's begun to hurt worse. It's a bit swollen...it looks like it may be slightly bruised. I'm not sure if I should get it xrayed or looked at or not. What concerns me...is that i can normally separate and wiggle my toes. And..when I try to do that now...the two little toes don't move. Plus...it hurts...and as I said, as time goes on it gets worse. The pain in mostly on the right side of my right ankle, and also in the back...the pain goes up to just under mid-calf. What should I do?

Answers:

You need to get to the ER or go to your doctor first thing in the morning. My suggestion is the ER so that you will have pain meds after they diagnose you and you will be able to sleep through the night. You should def. get an x-ray. Most x-ray machines now are digital so, once they take the picture the x-ray will be on the computer screen and the radiologist can usually have an ankle x-ray diagnosed within 5 minutes. If the radiologist isn't on-call, they will e-mail it and then they should have an answer back within 10-15 mins.
Saying that your little toes don't move really makes me think broken and fracture. Meaning that part of the ankle bone is broken (small portion) and it is also fractured. I am a doctor but I can't diagnose you over the internet. For now- until you get medical attention... keep ice on it all the time, no matter what!
Good Luck!
