Answers:
hey i had this surgery less than 6 weeks ago. i torn my medial meniscus - as other have said the meniscus is a special type of cartilage in the knee that allows the knee to absorb as much force as it does - ppl are really rough on knees and the meniscus does a great job most of the time. the knee is very strong up and down but force from the side or twisting the knee thats causes damage.
this is what i did, i twisted my knee as i slipped walking down a steep slope. it hurt and i couldn't straighten my leg. the doctor told me after my MRI that the meniscus-or cartilage had torn badly and moved in the joint blocking me from straightening my leg.
the surgery was about 6 weeks ago - it did hurt - it was short tho and i went home bout 5 - i had the surgery bit after 12. i could walk without crutches pretty soon after. i was hobbling the day after.
i was told i couldn't bend my knee past 90 degrees for 6 weeks (i kinda did a few times and it hurt!) - which means i haven't gone back to work for a while - i hurt my knee in april...
i wish you the best of luck - do all the physio and everything - it makes a difference in the long run!
