I have an infection on my toe from hiking but my dr says to come in before givin!

Question:

I have an infection on my toe from hiking but my dr says to come in before giving antibiotics. Any cures?

It hurts like crazy but I do not want to pay a $20 copay for him to look at it for one second then prescribe some antibiotics. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Answers:

The doctor needs to see the infection to find out if there is any gunk inside the wound, and to also figure out what kind of infection you could have. There are lots of antibiotic-resistent infections out there (do a search on MRSA), and some could cause serious problems if not taken care of.

My co-worker almost lost his arm when he got a cut on it at work, let it fester (because, like you, he didn't want to spring a measly $20 for the copay), and ended up in the emergency room with a blood infection when the infection ate down into his blood system. He almost died, and even though insurance paid for most of his hospital stay, he still was on the hook for the 20%, as well as having to spend a few weeks recovering at home as well as having to pay for extra meds.

Yeah, this is a scare tactic, but it's also a possibility. Just get the toe checked out.
