What would happen if somebody got their vocal chords cut and snapped?

I am wondering for a story I am writing ^^

Pardon me for not being completly sure. I was wondering if any sounds would be made. Or would it just be complete silence or not.

According to wiki Steven Hawking had a tracheotomy in 1985 and it rendered him unable to use his voice. So, one possible effect would be that you might not be able to talk.
