How long would doctor normally prescribe?!

Question:

How long would doctor normally prescribe?

How long would a doctor normally prescribe a medication for oxycontin or morphine? I know these are both narcotics, so I'm wondering what the 'normal' length of time a doc would give it to a patient so they didn't get addicted.

I'm aware that docs only prescribe a month at a time, but I'm wondering how many times they consider safe to do that - for how many total months would they allow someone to be on oxycontin or morphine.

Answers:

It depends on the doctor. If you're in a pain management clinic, you're there because you're going to need medication of some kind, be it narcotics or not, for the forseeable future. I've been on Oxycontin for a year. It isn't intended for short term pain, only chronic pain. You don't become an addict if you have real pain issues, you become dependant. That is VERY different from addiction, which is a behavioral issue.
