How long do concussions last?
On Friday I was shot in the head with a rock from a sling shot..i was told yesterday that I have a cerebral concussion..im feeling dizzy and off balance with headaches and what not...its been 3 days since the incident..and does anyone know anything i can do to speed up the recovery process

Answers:

Take it easy! Don't overexert yourself in order to recover as quickly as possible. The symptoms should clear up on their own in time.

Anytime that you increase your physical activity level or brain activity level you are increasing the blood flow and demands placed on your brain. The longer that you "aggravate" the brain like this, the longer your symptoms will last.

Do not participate in any sort of athletics (contact or non-contact) until you no longer have symptoms and have been cleared by a medical professional.

You did not specify your age, however, if you have homework/paperwork/etc that involves concentration and thinking skills, see if you are able to delay it a few days as this too may prolong your problems.

If you have been cleared to take pain medication, this may help with your headache. Be sure to only take the medications reccomended by your physician (generally NOT asprin as it thins the blood).

If at any point your symptoms begin to rapidly increase or you have new symptoms appearing, you should return to the ER immediately as this could be indicative of pressure building against your brain (this is a VERY BAD thing).

Unfortunately there's no way to actively speed up the process. You've just got to be responsible and observant about your own behavior. Head injuries are serious injuries and you should never be afraid to contact your doctor with any questions!
