Leg Trauma Question?!

Question:

Leg Trauma Question?

My boyfriend has been to the doc's and had an x-ray, no broken femur, but he's in so much pain still and the doc is perplexed...
what happened, is he slipped on a log over a creek, and hit the outside of his thigh, but there's no bruise there where he hit, except there's a 6" by 8" blackish purple bruise on the INSIDE of his thigh, he can move it with no pain, just cannot touch it or sleep because the blood seems to pool or cause pain inside and it hurts to shift positions. The fact there's no wound where he actually hit is what confuses his doctor. It's bad pain, oxycodone doesn't help it for more than an hour. What could be going on? What other specialist should he see?

Answers:

Sounds like muscle involvement, and maybe some slight involvement with the nerves as well. I would suggest asking the doc to take a CT scan, or maybe even an MRI if the pain doesn't lessen up during the next week or so. In addition to the opiate pain meds he's currently on (I believe you mentioned oxycodone), he might want to try taking a daily, measured dose of an OTC NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen or naproxen/naprosyn (Aleve). While it is true that icing it may help, you do NOT want to keep ice directly on it for a long period of time, as it could injure the epidermal and dermal tissues.
