Metal plate and screws in ankle?!

Question:

Metal plate and screws in ankle?

I have a metal plate and 2 screws in my right ankle, due to ORIF surgery I had back in January. I am at the end of my treatment, my doctor said I can have them removed in 6 months if I choose. What I am wondering is it better to leave them in or have them removed? The doctor said it is my choice, that if I do have them removed, I have to be very careful, and go through surgery and some therapy and walking in the boot a little longer. She also said there is no problem leaving it in. I just want to see what other people have done, and their experiences, other opinions.

Answers:

I have worked with many ORIF patients.. and in all honesty most of them keep it in! it really depends on where the plate and screws are on your ankle, and what kind of activities you do. My good friend had ORIF and she ended up having to have them taken out after a year because she plays soccer and it bothered her when she tried to play. My other good friend was a patient at the clinic and she had ORIF three years ago and shes doing fine. So if you dont need to have them out, dont have them taken out. If it bothers you after 6 months go right ahead. Good luck!
