I burnt my ear with my hair straightener; what should I do?!

Question:

I burnt my ear with my hair straightener; what should I do?

The burn is on the top rim of my ear and is about 2cm long. The skin peeled as soon as it happened but not any more since (its been three hours). Right after it happened I iced it and then put first aid cream on it. It hurt really bad for awhile but now feels fine. I just started to get worried when I felt a sticky fluid on the burn. What should I do and is this normal?

Answers:

You want to keep the wound clean, but don't use soap!! Soap strips the natural oil off your skin that is helping the wound heal. I would suggest using neosporin if you aren't already. That will help, as will putting a small bandage on it. The ear is a little harder to bandage, so if you can't get one on there, it's fine.

The clear fluid is what your body makes to help the skin heal. It will dry and crust over. That's normal. Leave it alone and don't pick at it. The most important thing about burns is preventing infection, so keeping anti-biotic ointment, or first aid cream will be what you need to do.

Try to keep your hair away from your ear too. That will help the healing process. It's hard, but it will help it heal faster.
